Young People & Type 1 Diabetes
Words of wisdom
This clip shows Indigenous and non-Indigenous young people talking about the main things they have learned from living with type 1 diabetes. They talk about the initial period after diagnosis being difficult and frightening, but say that over time they became more confident about managing the condition. They say that looking after their own health is important to them. They also talk about the benefits of telling friends, and about the support provided by diabetes educators. Their advice to other young people with diabetes is to 'live your life' and that diabetes 'won't hold you back from anything you want to do'. This clip promotes greater awareness of type 1 diabetes to all young people, including to those living with it. It is one of a series of clips in which young people discuss life with type 1 diabetes.
These Speaking from Experience clips features seven young people talking about the ways in which type 1 diabetes has affected their life. It was produced in partnership with Diabetes Australia VIC and Aboriginal Medical Service of Western Sydney.
