Diabetes is caused by a problem in the way your body makes or uses insulin. Insulin is needed to move blood sugar (glucose) into cells, where it is stored and later used for energy. If you have type 2 diabetes your body does not use insulin properly. This is called insulin resistance. At first, your pancreas makes extra insulin to make up for it. But, over time it isn't able to keep up and can't make enough insulin to keep your blood glucose at normal levels. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes.
This 'Speaking from Experience' program features interviews with 6 people who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and 1 with pre-diabetes. They discuss the impact the diagnosis has had on their lives and and offer the patient's perspective for managing diabetes on a daily basis.
