Muscular Dystrophy: Caregivers (Asia)

Video is Loading...

Muscular dystrophy is a large group of muscle diseases characterized by the development of muscle weakness, wasting and contractures which progresses and deteriorates over time. The muscle weakness of muscular dystrophy often begins in the legs which results in facing difficulties in walking; the need for leg and hand braces; and ultimately depending on a wheelchair for mobility.

Each disease is caused by one of a large variety of inherited gene abnormalities and often manifest in childhood, although some may begin in adulthood. While there is no known cure for muscular dystrophy, treatment such as medications and therapy can slow the course of the condition to improve quality of life.

This 'Speaking from Experience' program offers first-hand accounts from five caregivers who care for their loved ones with muscular dystrophy. They discuss the impact the condition has had on their lives, the ways they manage it, and the challenges it brings to everyday life. This program was produced in partnership with Muscular Dystrophy Association of Singapore (MDAS).
