Stroke in Midlife (USA)
Psychological impact
The trauma of a brain attack can take its toll on the mental health of survivors, especially those who were younger and more active when they experienced their stroke. Midlife stroke survivors sometimes experience symptoms of depression surrounding their condition, anxiety about a possible recurrence or fears about how to face their future.
This 'Speaking From Experience' video clip offers first-hand experiences from people who have experienced stroke prior to age 50. Here, 6 participants and 1 caregiver discuss the ways in which their mental health was affected by stroke, and the psychological challenges of asking for help with everyday tasks they used to do on their own.
